What is a foot care nurse?

A foot care nurse is a licensed nurse who has attained advanced training in lower extremity, foot and nail conditions, and providing routine medical foot care for persons at high risk for foot-related problems due to conditions including aging, diabetes, and peripheral vascular disease. The goal of regular foot care is to maintain healthy feet, address common foot issues, and prevent foot-related complications.

Feet change as we age. Nails can thicken and become difficult to cut. Calluses and thick, misshapened nails can cause pain when walking, increasing the risk for falls. Many seniors have difficulty reaching their feet to properly care for them. Conditions such as poor vision, arthritis, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and taking blood thinners can make it unsafe to cut one’s own nails.

Foot care nurses play a critical role in helping patients improve foot health, prevent complications, and maintain mobility, independence and a better quality of life through regular foot care.

Regular foot care improves safety, mobility & independence for seniors.
